Coyote Safety Tips

Coyote

Coyotes have been spotted in the City of Wilton Manors. If you see a coyote in your yard, follow these steps to ensure your safety and discourage it from returning:

1. Stay Calm & Observe
Coyotes are generally not aggressive toward humans but may be searching for food or passing through.

2. Haze the Coyote (Make it Uncomfortable)
a. Make loud noises – Clap, yell, use an air horn, or bang pots and pans.
b. Wave your arms and appear larger – Stand tall and open a jacket or spread your arms.
c. Throw small objects near (not at) the coyote – Such as sticks, rocks, or balls.
d. Use a water hose or spray bottle – A sudden splash can deter them.
e. Use bright lights – Flashlights or motion-activated lights can scare them away.

3. NEVER feed coyotes!

4. Anything that can attract a dog, cat or raccoon can attract a coyote

5. Secure garbage

6. Clean up pet food, fallen fruit & bird feeders

7. Keep cats indoors

8. Keep dogs on leashes and supervised outdoors (especially small dogs)

If a coyote is acting aggressively (approaching people, not running away, or attacking pets), contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife (FWC) Regional Office: (561) 625-5122 or Wildlife Alert Hotline: 888-404-3922.
