Electricity
The City’s electric provider is Florida Power & Light. Their Customer Care Center can be reached at (954) 797-5000 during regular business hours. If you are experiencing a power outage, you can call 1-800-4-OUTAGE or go to FPL.com/outage to report it or get the status of repairs.
FPL also has a PowerTracker interactive application online. Simply enter your address in the “search” box and a neighborhood map comes up that shows outages as color-coded triangles that indicate how many customers are affected. If you then click on a color-coded triangle, you will see more detailed information about that particular outage, including an estimated time for restoration of power.
If you see a streetlight that’s out, please call the City’s Utilities Department at (954) 390-2190 during the City’s regular business hours, or report it directly to FPL online.
Energy Saving Tips for Everyday Living
While you can’t control rising energy costs, you can lower your energy bill by following these simple and proven tips in your home:
- Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when you have a full load. Use the cold water setting when possible – and always clean the clothes dryer’s lint filter after every load.
- Keep the lights off in unoccupied rooms.
- Replace light bulbs with an ENERGY STAR-qualified compact fluorescent light bulb. They use 75 percent less energy and last about 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb.
- Close and/or lock all windows, vents and doors in rooms that aren’t being used.
- Lower the temperature on the water heater to 120 degrees. Reducing the temperature by 20 degrees can save you nearly $50 a year.
- Replace or clean air conditioning and furnace air filters. A clogged, dirty filter forces your a/c and furnace to work harder. A clean filter can save up to 10 percent on your bill.
- Remove window air conditioning units when the summer is over to prevent heat from escaping. If the unit can’t be moved, cover it to prevent drafts.
- Use expanding foam (available in spray cans) to seal the gaps around pipes that connect to the house from the outside.
- Install weather stripping or caulk around doors and windows, and place foam gaskets behind outlet plate covers on exterior walls. If there’s a large gap at the bottom of an exterior door, install a door sweep.
